What is a FEES?
FEES stands for Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing. This is a functional assessment of swallowing and is administered by a licensed and certified (ASHA) speech language pathologist (SLP) who has undergone additional training and education to be able to perform and interpret the study results.
MBSS or FEES?
There are currently two types of imaging studies that assess swallow function. A Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS) and FEES. Both provide reliable results, but there are differences to consider when deciding which is best for your patient.
MBSS is performed at radiology imaging center under videofluoroscopy and involve an SLP, a radiologist, and usually a radiology technician. In short, it is an
"x-ray swallow test."
Is there a benefit to using FEES instead of MBSS?
MBSS
-
Involves a team to complete
-
Requires transportation to radiology center
-
Foods are covered in or consist of barium
-
Radiation exposure (albeit a small dose)
-
Difficult for bariatric or claustrophobic patients
-
"5 minute limit:" Duration limits to reduce exposure
-
Varying fluoroscopy resolution
FEES
-
Able to be performed in your environment/anywhere
-
Only one SLP necessary
-
No time limit
-
High-resolution color imaging via camera
-
Low-risk for complications
-
Use any food (we have some pre-selected but encourage you to try things you eat regularly)
-
Visualizes vocal folds and secretions within the throat
*For both tests there can be contraindications and these should be considered by your SLP before proceeding with any instrumental dysphagia testing. E.g. A patient with extreme agitation and combative behaviors may not be appropriate for either test
